Gearhart, OR properties are becoming increasingly popular among those who wish to escape the bustle of the big city, and embrace the ideals of a simpler life. A quaint seaside community in northwestern Oregon, Gearhart is reminiscent of Old New England?s famous beach towns, with its elegant pre-war vacation homes and tranquil, windswept beaches.

Gearhart was founded in 1848 by homesteader Phillip Gearhart.  In 1888, entrepreneur Marshall Kinney purchased more than 800 acres of Gearhart?s original 1800-acre farm, and promptly deeded a segment of the land to the Astoria South Coast Railway Company. Subsequently, a rail link was completed to the city of Seaside, and Kinney began realizing his dream of a master-planned beachfront resort community. At this time, a large hotel, a broad footpath, natural dunes, and several grand summer homes were completed. Other Gearhart, OR Homes for Sale were built during this time, many of which are set on smaller lots which are more affordable to average home buyers, and the first permanent residences of Gearhart were quickly established. The Gearhart Golf Course, Oregon?s first golf course and among the first 100 courses built in America, was originally founded to cater to elite summer residents and is still in operation today. The golf course was completed between 1892 and 1902, and was expanded to include 18 holes in 1915.

Throughout the 20th century and into the present day, Gearhart has remained the same small, tightly-knit beachside community it was in its early days. Small businesses are favored over large corporations, and many year-round residents own businesses in the city.  Many original Gearhart, OR properties still stand, lovingly refurbished by their owners in an effort to preserve the glorious aesthetics of a bygone era. There are also a number of modern homes for buyers to choose from, including those with clean lines and many large windows that showcase the incredible views of ocean and sky.

Prices for Gearhart, OR properties have been rising steadily over the course of the last decade. If you are in the market for a summer retreat, or a new year-round residence in one of Oregon?s most beautiful locations, now is the time to buy.
