Youngs River

Area Links
Lewis & Clark National Historic Park

WESTERN FORK Imagine you are driving along the top of a low ridge on a paved country road. When you look down to your left you see a lush green valley sprinkled with perfect farms. In the center of the valley winds a river that is just the right size. You can see yourself in a canoe floating lazily down the river basking in the fresh scent of greenery, you take deep slow breaths, an eagle soars overhead in slow arcs. Was that a deer in the undergrowth The road slopes gradually upward, and the scenery grows wilder. You round a curve and there at the end of the road you follow signs to a parking area. You stop and stare amazed. This doesn't seem like the kind of place, yet here it is: a waterfall! HISTORY In 1792 Lieutenant William Broughton, commander of the Chatham, a ship of the Captain George Vancouver expedition, named the river for Sir George Young of the British Royal Navy. The name later extended to the bay. Not knowing that the river had already been named, Lewis and Clark gave it the Indian name Kil-haw-a-nack-kle, and named the bay Meriwether Bay for Lewis. Members of the Corps of Discovery explored the river to the falls on a hunting expedition. EASTERN FORK The area along the Eastern Fork is also rural, but with more homes, a main highway, and the town of Olney. Near Astoria, where the Youngs River flows into the bay, the area is more populated with a commercial sector and Miles Crossing, nearby. If you are looking for a rural home in a beautiful setting, this may be just the place for you.
