Clatsop County, "where the mountains reach the sea & your vacation lasts forever!" It is believed that our county is named for the Clatsop Indians that lived along the coast of the majestic Pacific Ocean. Lewis & Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1805-06 here before beginning their long journey back to the east coast. Clatsop County is home to Astoria, OR., which is recognized as Oregon's Oldest city. Astoria was originally established as a fur trading post & named after John Jacob Astor.
The 2,000 census records reflect that our area had a popluation of: 35,630 The area is comprised of 1,085 sq. miles with 827 miles of land combined with 258 sq. miles of water. Commerce today is mainly derived from mfg., & tourism. Fishing & timber remain important, but not industries of days long since passed.
